Administration of Holy Communion
In view of the current concern regarding cross-infection by the flu virus, the Bishop and senior staffs have advised that certain precautionary measures should be put in place when administering Holy Communion.
At the moment, we are using the following measures: the clergy at the altar will use alcohol gel before handing the elements (the bread and wine); should you not wish to drink from the chalice please leave the altar rail after receiving the bread - you will still have received the ‘full communion’ in the consecrated bread alone; the practice of ‘intinction’ (dipping your wafer into the wine) is discouraged at this time, as is that of receiving the wafer directly in the mouth - we would ask that you receive the bread in your hands instead. We do not at present have specific guidance regarding the sharing of the peace by hand-to-hand contact: please be sensitive to the wishes of others regarding this issue. It must be emphasised that these are precautionary measures only; based on Diocesan guidance and we will keep the matter under review.
