Sociable Strollers
Our June walk started from The Fox Inn at Ansty. It took in Melcombe Park with its famous yew hedge and the church of St. Andrew, Melcombe Horsey next to Bingham's Melcombe House.
The church is mostly fourteenth century and is built of stone and flint. It has two bells which get a mention in the second stanza of John Betjeman’s poem “Dorset”:
“Lord’s Day bells from Bingham’s Melcombe, Iwerne Minster, Shroton, Plush
Down the grass between the beeches, mellow in the evening hush.”
Though the morning was damp and parts of the walk wet underfoot we managed to escape the rain and returned to the pub for our usual convivial lunch. Our July walk will probably be a short one on Portland followed by a cream tea. Please watch the pew sheet for details.
