Weymouth Street Pastors
Plans are underway to launch Street Pastors in Weymouth Town Centre in June 2008. Street Pastors is a church-based initiative where a small team of Christians walk the streets of the town in order to help those who are vulnerable within the night-time economy of the pubs and clubs scene. The Street Pastors come alongside people in time of need to listen, care and offer practical help towards making the vulnerable safe.
Street Pastor initiatives are already running in many towns and cities in the UK, including London, Manchester and Portsmouth. So far over 20 people from across Weymouth churches have stepped forward to become Street Pastors. Their training will begin in February so that they are ready to take to the streets in June. The training is being supported and delivered by a variety of agencies, including Weymouth Police, Dorset Drug Intervention Programme, Weymouth Rough Sleepers Initiative, Weymouth Ambulance Service, and Waves. While being a church-based
initiative, Street Pastors seeks to partner with other agencies that are committed to helping the local community.
If you would like further information on Weymouth Street Pastors, or to contribute towards funding the initiative, please call the local co-ordinator – Rev. Tony Stephens on 01305 835096.
